John Ball
Sir John Macleod Ball FRS FRSE, was educated at the University of Cambridge and Sussex University. Ball's research interests include elasticity, the calculus of variations, and infinite-dimensional dynamical systems. Ball is listed as an ISI highly cited researcher. In his career, he was honored as
     Professor of Heriot-Watt University
     Sedleian Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Oxford, Fellow of Queen's College, Oxford. 
     President of the International Mathematical Union (2003–2006)
     Knighted in the New Year Honours list "for services to Science"(2006)
     Member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters 
     Fellow of the American Mathematical Society
     Member of the first Abel Prize Committee (2002) 
     Member of Fields Medal Committee (1998) 
     President of the London Mathematical Society (1996-1998)
     President of the International Mathematical Union, IMU (2003-2006)
     Elected on the Executive Board of ICSU for a three-year period starting January 2012. 
     Won the Theodore von Kármán Prize with Stuart S. Antman (1999)
     Won King Faisal International Prize in Mathematics (2018)
     Received Honorary Doctorate from Heriot-Watt University (1998) 
     Elected a Fellow of The Royal Society of Edinburgh (1980)
Abstract 
The talk will describe various generalizations of the Hadamard jump condition, and how they can lead to information about polycrystal microstructure arising from martensitic phase transformations. (Joint work with Carsten Carstensen (Humboldt University, Berlin)
