The award list of the 17th Shing-Tung Yau College Student Mathematics Contest has recently been released! Yu Lingyu from the School of Mathematical Sciences of Tongji University won the Silver Medal in the individual event of Geometry and Topology! Luo Yuanhe won the Honorable Mention in the individual event of Probability and Statistics, and Liu Juncheng won the Honorable Mention in the individual event of Analysis and Differential Equations as well as the Honorable Mention in the individual event of Algebra, Number Theory and Combinatorics! Congratulations to these students on their outstanding achievements!

The Shing-Tung Yau College Student Mathematics Contest was initiated by Professor Shing-Tung Yau in 2010. Focusing on a comprehensive assessment of students’ fundamental mathematical knowledge and basic skills at the undergraduate level, it selects outstanding mathematical talents against the standards of the qualifying examinations for graduate studies at leading universities abroad. The contest aims to motivate students to make all-round progress in foundational mathematical knowledge, comprehensive ability and academic attainment, and to support the development of mathematics education in Chinese universities. It has now been successfully held for seventeen editions. Since 2025, the contest has been upgraded to an international event, with overseas test centers added in countries such as the United States and Russia, and is open to currently enrolled undergraduates worldwide who have not yet obtained a bachelor’s degree. Since registration for this year’s contest opened in March 2026, more than 3,500 students from over 500 universities around the world, including Tsinghua University and Peking University, have registered for the individual events, while 75 teams have registered for the team event.

The School of Mathematical Sciences is committed to deepening the cultivation of top-notch talent in foundational disciplines. It has built a tiered, categorized and precisely tailored training mechanism for academic competitions, helping students consolidate their mathematical foundation and exercise their research thinking. During the preparation period for this year’s contest, the school carried out systematic and excellence-oriented coaching, providing comprehensive and solid support for the participating students in their pursuit of excellent results. Moving forward, the school will continue to refine its regularized competition training system, guide students to devote themselves to the study of mathematical theories and scale the heights of academic excellence, and strive to cultivate a new generation of Tongji mathematics youth who embrace scientific ideals and shoulder the mission of scientific research.
