From November 14th to 15th, jointly organized by the School of Mathematical Sciences and the Mathematical Center of Intelligient Computing and Application in Tongji University, the Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Science Seminar was successfully held in the 108 lecture hall of Zhiyuan Building. This seminar aims to make full use of our school's advantageous disciplines and various resources, to strengthen the intersection and integration of mathematics, artificial intelligence and other applied disciplines, and to provide a platform for scholars in interdisciplinary fields to communicate and cooperate. Professor Gu Xianglin, vice president of Tongji University, and He Cheng, director of the Department of Mathematics and Physics, National Natural Science Fund of China, have attended and delivered speeches. Nearly 100 teachers and students from all departments of our school have participated in this seminar.

This seminar invited Professor Qin Huanlong, Dean of Tenth People’s Hospital of Tongji University, Professor Li Bofeng, Dean of College of Surveying and Geo-informatics, Professor Chen Jianbing of the College of Civil Engineering, and Professor Xu Xuejun, Dean of the School of Mathematical Sciences. Experts from different disciplines, as well as young scholars from more than ten domestic universities and research institutes, including the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science in Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen), discussed and communicated together over mathematical problems in frontier fields, including Deep learning, Smart Medicare, and Geodetic Survey, etc.

Gu Xianglin, vice president of Tongji University first delivered an opening speech on behalf of the Tongji University. He extended a warm welcome to scholars from inside and outside Tongji University and introduced the background and development goal of the Mathematical Center of Intelligent Computing and Application in Tongji University, as well as the development direction focusing on cutting-edge mathematical theories of intelligent computing, data-driven scientific computing, and applications of intelligent computing. At the same time, Gu Xianglin conveyed his hope that aiming at the frontier areas of the national development strategy, the Mathematical Center and the experts present should work together to improve the supply system of mathematical foundations as soon as possible, form a more mature mechanism for mutual promotion of basic research and applied research, and serve the construction of the Shanghai Science and Technology Innovation Center and the national strategic development.

He Cheng, Director of Mathematics Division of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, delivered a speech. He pointed out that the world today is undergoing major changes unseen in a century, and the domestic and international environment facing my country's development has undergone profound and complex changes, which puts forward more urgent requirements for accelerating technological innovation. At the just-concluded Fifth Plenary Session of the 19th Central Committee, General Secretary Xi also pointed out that to strengthen the national strategic scientific and technological strength, it is necessary to strengthen basic research, focus on original innovation, and promote interdisciplinary integration. Basic research is the source of scientific and technological innovation. Many 'stuck-neck' technical problems faced by our country are rooted in the failure of keeping up the basic theoretical research. Therefore, the Mathematical Center of Intelligent Computing and Application in Tongji University should start from the latest progress in Computational Mathematics and Statistics, explore the autonomy and intelligence of scientific computing under the condition of big data, and develop new mathematical theories and algorithms.

This seminar adopted the online and offline interactive meeting mode. The atmosphere was lively and enthusiastic. During the conference, 26 experts from different fields inside and outside the school gave academic reports respectively on the intelligent control of complex systems, intelligent detection and calculation perception, data-driven intelligent transportation systems, intelligent medical care, and several hot issues in mathematical geodesy, etc. They shared their scientific research progress and research results. Representatives of undergraduates and graduate students from the School of Mathematical Sciences and various faculties listened carefully to the report. The students expressed that through this seminar, they were exposed to the frontiers of Computational Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, learned the tremendous role played by latest mathematical methods in many of the fields in science and engineering, and had a deeper understanding of the value of mathematics at the level of national strategy and socio-economic development.

The Mathematical Center of Intelligient Computing and Application in Tongji University established by School of Mathematical Sciences is an important deployment for Tongji University to closely follow the requirements of the central government, aim at the frontiers of world science and technology, lead the development of artificial intelligence, and strive to seize the commanding heights of mathematical basic research innovation.
