Abstract:Two-dimensional turbulent flows provide a fundamental model to understand key turbulence mechanisms found in natural and industrial systems. In this seminar, I will present a series of studies conducted over the past several years, primarily addressing the analysis of turbulence within the framework of two-dimensional flows. Depending on the specific application, various geometrical configurations have been examined, including planar, spherical, and cylindrical geometries. Numerical simulation results are systematically compared with those obtained from experiments employing soap films. The observed agreement between computational outcomes and experimental measurements provides validation for the developed numerical code, as well as for the underlying mathematical models and experimental methodologies. The first part of the presentation will primarily address the analysis of turbulent flows using wavelet packet techniques. This approach has provided new insights into the roles played by distinct flow structures in the cascades of energy and enstrophy. The second, and more substantial, part will focus on numerical simulations modeling hemispherical soap films. In particular, we will demonstrate the consistency between the numerical results, the soap film experiments and atmospheric observations concerning the displacement and intensity of cyclones. Finally, we will present recent progress on the numerical modeling of non-planar two-dimensional Rayleigh–Bénard cells subjected to asymmetry or oscillatory perturbations.
