This talk presents a sampled-data approach for the robust control of a single qubit (quantum bit). The required robustness is defined using a sliding mode domain and the control law is designed offline and then utilized online with a single qubit having bounded uncertainties. Two classes of uncertainties are considered including uncertainties in the system Hamiltonian and uncertainties in the coupling strength of the system-environment interaction. Four cases including the case without decoherence, and cases with amplitude damping decoherence, phase damping decoherence and depolarizing decoherence are analyzed in detail. Sampling periods are specifically designed for these cases to guarantee the required robustness.

A class of generalized additive partial linear models is investigated. We propose the use of polynomial spline smoothing for estimation of nonparametric functions, and derive quasi-likelihood based estimators for the linear parameters. We establish asymptotic normality for the estimators of the parametric components. The procedure avoids solving big system of equations as in kernel-based procedures and thus results in gains in computational simplicity. We further develop a class of variable selection procedures for the linear parameters by employing a nonconcave penalized likelihood, which is shown to have an oracle property. Monte Carlo simulations and an analysis of a dataset from Pima Indian diabetes study are presented for illustration

We discuss the problem of existence of plurisubharmonic defining functions for pseudoconvex domains in complex manifolds. For a given domain we also analyze the structure of the set where all such functions fail to be strictly plurisubharmonic.

I will introduce some of the differential equations which arise in quantum cohomology: the quantum differential equations, the WDVV equations, and the tt*-equations. These differential equations are motivated by the theory of Gromov-Witten invariants, but they have relations with various topics in differential, algebraic, and symplectic geometry. They are also "integrable systems", in the sense that they have many algebraic symmetries. In some cases at least, these symmetries can be used to solve the equations.
